I’m sure we’ve all subscribed to a subscription service at some point in our lives. For me, I’ve tried Five Four Club, 12 Society, Trunk Club, Stitch Fix, and a few others. I just really don’t like to shop and the idea of getting new clothes without having to lift a finger is a business model I’ll probably always fall into. But they’re not limited to just clothes. There are subscription services for food, comic books, coffee, razors, books, movies, music, and nearly everything in between. Packaged, a new podcast, aims to help consumers get a grasp on the latest trends while sifting through the litany of subscriptions out there — ultimately recommending the best boxes for you.

Packaged does a great job at rationally finding and analyzing the value each respective box brings. Obviously you don’t want to be spending $50 a month for something worth $25 at the store. Along with the careful analysis, the Packaged team gets great access to talk to the people behind your favorite boxes to better understand their backstory and their goals. Oh, and they usually have exclusive promo codes for their listeners, give it a shot!

I got a chance to speak with Eric, co-host of Packaged, to discuss their challenges for the podcast, why they decided to podcast, and where they want to take it from here. See below for our Q&A.

Here’s the latest episode:

Discover Pods: What’s your podcast about?

Eric: It is THE show about subscription businesses and the passionate people behind each of them.

DP: Was there a tipping point or a certain moment where you finally decided to podcast?

Eric: I actually had many failed attempts at podcasting before “Packaged” but basically one day in the peak of listening to way too many podcasts on a daily basis I realized I just love them and want to make my own. Now I’ve gotten better with editing, understanding how podcasts work, and understanding my audience more than ever before.

DP: What are you subscription services we should stay away from? On the flip side, what are some that provide great value?

Eric: I would say so far we have not had any bad subscription boxes sent to us really although we are still early in the show. As for great subscription services I would love to buy every single Honey Crate possible they have a unique box heavily based on bees of course. After talking to Nick Hoefly the creator of the service I know that Honey Crate will go for as long as they want it to go because he is the best man for the job, I mean he bee keeps on the rooftops of New York City, that takes some major effort. Another favorite box of mine just aired on the newest episode of Packaged by the name of Escape the Crate. It is a game within a subscription box full of mystery and history. I just ordered the newest box and hope to be getting it asap!

DP: As a fairly new podcast, what’s something you didn’t expect diving into the project?

Eric: I did not expect to have as much luck finding a great host for the show and business partner Ryan Hughes. He has been great to work with and just overall has made the show in my eyes. I do all the background work but he is the glue of Packaged.

DP: How has the listener feedback been?

Eric: So far listener feedback has been positive we are seeking more feedback but it will come in time just like anything else on the internet.

DP: Who’s your dream podcast guest?

Eric: I think my dream podcast guest would have to be the creators of the five four club. I just really like what the offer.

DP: What’s the biggest challenge you face as an indie podcaster?

Eric: The biggest challenge for me as an indie podcast and probably anyone else really is just getting the word out. We are working hard on getting to the ears of more people right now.

DP: What are your five favorite podcasts?

Eric: My favorite five podcasts right now are:

  1. Waypoint
  2. Cults, Cryptids, and Conspiracies
  3. Jenna & Julien Podcast
  4. Thin Air Podcast
  5. Reply All

DP: Anything else you’d like to add?

Eric: I just want to say anyone wanting to start a new podcast although there are many out there, there is still plenty of room for more just try to make something original and something you love.
