Podcast Spotlight: The Existential Files

What are we doing here? What’s the meaning of life? Will we continue to call them podcasts after the last iPod is long gone? Deep existential questions like (two thirds of) the ones above help drive the conversation of The Existential Files, a podcast that explores the universe, life, and everything in between.

For me, my podcasts listening typically mirrors the mood I’m in. Occasionally, I’m looking to think introspectively and want a podcast that helps facilitate that train of thought.

Luckily, The Existential Files delivers on this promise in a unique manner, sometimes even making you laugh. Co-hosts Dr. Matthew Smith and Dr. Louie Savva are typically joined by a guest specializing in philosphy, psychology, sociology, or another area of academia. I got a chance to chat with Dr. Savva about his podcast and where they want to go from here. Below is our interview.

Discover Pods: What’s your podcast about and what’s a tweet-length synopsis of your podcast?

Louie: The Meaning (or not) of Life. Two psychologists go on a Rick-and-Morty’esque exploration of life, the universe and everything.

DP: What’s unique about your podcast?

Louie: To hear other people’s take on the meaning of life, the nature of the universe, existence etc.

DP: How do you find your guests? Anyone you’re specifically targeting?

Louie: Guests are sometimes people we know. Otherwise we contact people we think will be interesting and invite them on the show.

DP: Who would be your dream guest?

Louie: Dream? Charles Darwin. God. Someone alive. That would be Daniel Dennett. Stephen Pinker. Richard Dawkins. Someone like that.

DP: Why did you choose to podcast?

Louie: Both co-hosts blog. Seemed like a natural extension to blogging..with added guests.

DP: Do you think we’ve reached “peak podcast”

Louie: Podcasts are a great medium. I’m not sure that I’d know what peak podcast is though.

DP: Anything else you’d like to add?

Louie: We believe that content is king. No music. No great production value. But hopefully we’re very interesting and make you think (and maybe laugh along the way).

DP: What are your top 5 favorite podcasts?

Louie: I personally love a bit of true crime.
