Do you roll your eyes and scoff at horror movies? We’ve all been there. But, get ready to hear the real scary stories – told by the people who lived them. The first season of Hairy features stories from Vietnam War pilots, and episodes toggle between a cool, calm narrator and veterans telling their own frightening stories. This includes hairy situations of shot down planes, search and rescue missions in the jungle, flying through storms at night, and more. Military jargon is well explained and the narrator walks listeners through exercises better visualize the situation and keep it real.

Hearing people tell their own stories is powerful, and the background music and special effects only add to the eerie vibe. Listeners can really feel the storyteller’s anxiety. The production is well planned, and, of course, each story is told by an expert who lived it. This podcast is recommended for those who just can’t quench their thirst with fictional scary stories.

We were fortunate to talk with Graves about the podcast, how they differentiate from other podcasts, and their future plans in podcasting. See below for our full Q&A.

DISCOVER PODS: How’d you get into podcasting?

GRAVES: I had to do something to capture these stories before all of the vets start dying of old-age.

DISCOVER PODS: In your own words, why should listeners tune in to Hairy?

GRAVES: It’s entertaining. Thrilling stories that are hard to believe, but it all really happened!

DISCOVER PODS: What kind of feedback have you heard from your listeners?

GRAVES: Quite positive. The guys who were in the middle of it all say it’s a worthy account. People who don’t know anything about the subject matter have found it kind of addictive.

DISCOVER PODS: Describe your recording set up? What equipment are you using?

GRAVES: Extremely basic. Good condenser mic, Scarlette sound card, and Audacity for editing.

DISCOVER PODS: What’s the biggest challenge you face as an indie podcaster?

GRAVES: I’m doing everything. Writing, narration, marketing etc. In this case, I’m interviewing guys that are all +80 years old most of whom have never listened to a podcast. They’re fantastic though.

DISCOVER PODS: Where do you want to take your podcast?

GRAVES: All the way! The concept of ‘Hairy’ is flexible. Great stories about hairy situations recounted by the people who lived through them. Next season could be about Brazilian drug gangs or anything hairy really.

DISCOVER PODS: What other podcasts are you listening to now?

GRAVES: Hardcore History (always), Crime Town, Today in Virology

DISCOVER PODS: Anything else you’d like to add?

GRAVES: It’s a not-for-profit venture.  No ads and 100% of donations are going to the Air Warrior Courage Foundation (4-star rated charity helping vets in need). www.hairystories.com
