Podcast Spotlight: The Douglas Coleman Show

Douglas Coleman, also known as Mr. Smooth and Savvy, is a radio talk show host, musician, and songwriter living in Las Vegas. Coleman’s syndicated show features fascinating and sometimes famous guests from all walks of life – from musicians to political figures to authors. Previous guests include John Byner, Ed Roman, Tracy McLaughlin, and more! Sometimes the show is chatty, sometimes it’s music, but it’s always entertaining.

Listeners will find The Douglas Coleman Show very relaxing thanks to Coleman’s calming voice. You can tell he wants his guests to feel comfortable during their interview, and it is easy to imagine yourself in the same room with Coleman and his guests, just hanging out and listening in on their conversations. Find all episodes on YouTube, including a huge back catalogue which spans over the past four years. You can even submit yourself as a guest at radiohostsandguests.com! Shows come out each Monday and Friday at 3 p.m. EST.

We were fortunate to talk with Douglas Coleman about the podcast, how they differentiate from other podcasts, and their future plans in podcasting. See below for our full Q&A.

DISCOVER PODS: How’d you get into podcasting?

COLEMAN: I’ve been a Singer/Songwriter and musician my whole life. As a way to promote my music in this DIY internet environment, the PR company I was using at the time started to book me on podcasts and radio shows. Some of them were really good shows and some were not. After doing about 10 of these shows, I thought that I might be able to do a good show to help promote other indie music artists. At first we did the show live, but after 8 weeks, we switched to a pre-recorded format. The show has grown over the years to include actors, film makers, authors as well as music artists.

DISCOVER PODS: In your own words, why should listeners tune in to the Douglas Coleman Show?

COLEMAN: For people who are looking for an alternative to all of the toxic political shows that are out there, The Douglas Coleman Show provides unbiased, more light hearted entertainment. More excapism than reality. If you’re a fan of Dick Cavett or Johnny Carson’s style of show , our show might be for you.

DISCOVER PODS: What kind of feedback have you heard from your listeners?

COLEMAN: We have had great feedback. Most of it regarding my particular conversational style of interviewing. Many people have said that coming on the show is more like talking to an old friend rather than being interviewed.

DISCOVER PODS: Describe your recording set up? What equipment are you using?

COLEMAN: I’m using the equipment I had from my music recording studio.
NEUMANN TLM 103 Microphone and a TASCAM DP-32SD multitrack recorder. We use Mixpad to edit the shows.

DISCOVER PODS: What’s the biggest challenge you face as an indie podcaster?

COLEMAN: By far the biggest challenge is promotion. There are lots and lots of companies that promote music, films or authors. I’ve found very few who want to take on the promotion of a podcast.

DISCOVER PODS: Where do you want to take your podcast?

COLEMAN: Like all of us, we’d like to see more listeners, and grow our fan base. Recently we’ve started a video edition of the show which is getting a good response.

DISCOVER PODS: What other podcasts are you listening to now?

COLEMAN: Joe Rogan is about the only other one I listen to at this point.  I listen to Howard Stern but I’m not sure if that counts as a podcast per se.

DISCOVER PODS: Anything else you’d like to add?

COLEMAN: The one nice thing about doing a podcast is they don’t change with the fashions and trends the way music does. As long as I can still speak, I can do the show.
