Trending on the comedy podcast scene: Two Girls One Mic: The Porncast

The new and independent podcast, Two Girls One Mic: The Porncast, hosted by Alice Vaughn and Yvette d’Entremont, has already made a splash on Apple’s Top Comedy Podcast Chart.

Since releasing a trailer episode, “#foreplay”, on August 25^th, their first three episodes have earned the duo a spot within Apple’s top 20 comedy podcasts.*

On their show, they review porn—and aim to make a change in its societal perception.

“We review the plot holes, and the other holes of porn,” said Vaughn. “We’re also trying to normalize an entire industry everyone is clearly aware of, yet seem to know very little about or have common misconceptions of.”

Vaughn said that the desire to start a podcast was one that she and d’Entremont shared for a while before settling on what they wanted to devote their time to talking about. They knew they were onto something, she said, when they discovered their mutual love for critiquing the plotlines of porn.

For their podcast, they try to make sure that the films they review will resonate with their audience or will be easy to follow.

“We watch the movies independently, scribble a bunch of notes, and then just record us discussing the movies,” said Vaughn. “We want our discussions to be as in the moment as possible, so we attempt to refrain from texting each other too much beforehand. For guest interviews, we coordinate a date/time that works for all parties, try doing research beforehand on the topics, and then just have a causal conversation for the show.”

They also plan on hosting guests fairly often.

“It’s fun to chat with the actors, experts, and comedians to get another voice in the conversation when discussing films or the industry,” said Vaughn.

They were able to cultivate their audience from past ventures.

“Yvette and I have spent the last few years building up our audiences in respect to our different projects,” said Vaughn. “For example, Yvette works full time as SciBabe. She’s a debunker of pseudoscience through a combination of accessibly written, accurate science (with a side of dirty jokes). Whereas I have built a brand around my product, Offensive Crayons, which are exactly what you think they are…crayons with offensive color names (boner pill blue, miscarriage maroon, privilege (white)). Our audiences already have low expectations of us acting ‘ladylike’, so they were perfectly primed when we released a porn podcast.”

The response to their show, so far, has been almost entirely positive she said. “I think at most we’ve had one person out of thousands who said Jesus wouldn’t save us, but we’re not too concerned about that.”

At the core of it Vaughn said that she and d’Entremont are “two science communicators” cultivating a genuine discussion with the aim to reduce stigmatization of an industry that is widely participated in.

“Everyone’s a critic, the only difference is we just critique porn. We consider ourselves the Statler and Waldorf of porn,” said Vaughn.
