In an extreme Jerry Seinfeld voice, “now what’s the deal with podcasts?” Observational comedy has always been a staple in my word, that’s why I was excited to find the Sensible People podcast — an observational and raunchy comedy podcast.

Started by three friends out of Chicago, Sensible People dives into a variety of topics including discussing their first jobs, favorite candy flavors, and the ultimate fast food order. Basically, it’s everything you’d want and expect out of a comedy podcast.

We were fortunate enough to catch up with Taylor, one of the three hosts of Sensible People, to discuss how the podcast started, the difficulties of indie podcasters, and some of their favorite episodes so far. See below for our Q&A.

Discover Pods: How’d you get into podcasting?

Taylor: We began throwing ideas together in early 2017 and launched with three episodes in October of that same year. We first met in person in February of 2017 and our first release was October of 2017, so 7 months or so before going live. Ryan and I wanted a to create something that we could use as a canvas for our wild sense of humor. Amber had a passion for podcasts and helped drive us to using a podcast as our platform.

DP: In your own words, why should listeners tune into Sensible People?

Taylor: Everyone needs more laughter in their lives. Our sense of humor is often absurd and raunchy, but much of it revolves around everyday observations that are relatable. We also get creative with the bits we do and think that people will appreciate our genuine chemistry between one another.

DP: Your episodes cover a wide range of topics. Which have been your favorite so far?

Taylor: I think we all have a different favorite episode. Our interviews have been a real treat and we were really able to dive into some polarizing stuff. Our recurring segments that have become popular such as; Sensible or Not, Would You Rather, Did It Really Happen? and the Hall of Fame of Freaks have also been really fun and allowed us to give something to look forward to for the fans.

DP: What’s the most difficult part of podcasting for you?

Taylor: To be as successful as we intend to be you have to view running a podcast as a business. This requires constant attention so to do it on the side of our regular jobs is of course a challenge. The effort put in will only benefit us and be reflected in what we get out of it though.

DP: What podcasts are you listening to now?

Taylor: We all listen to different stuff. Amber loves Last Podcast on the Left and My Favorite Murder. Ryan and I like comedy pods that we can get ideas from or become inspired by.

DP: Anything else you’d like to add?

Taylor: We’re hoping to do a some live shows and festivals later in the year and we just started selling merchandise. We’re also hoping to amp up our YouTube channel. We’ve got big plans for the rest of 2018!
