We were fortunate to talk with Billups about the podcast, how they differentiate from other podcasts, and their future plans in podcasting. See below for our full Q&A.

DISCOVER PODS: How’d you get into podcasting?

LUZIOUS: As a professional drag queen, I travel a lot and I love podcasts when I am traveling. I knew that one day I wanted to have my own podcast, but my busy show schedule never allowed for an opportunity for me to sit down and actually make it happen. So when COVID-19 caused performing venues to shut down and I wasn’t working, I decided it was a great time to start bringing my idea out of my head and into the microphone.

DISCOVER PODS: In your own words, why should listeners tune in to Snack Size: The Podcast?

LUZIOUS: I love what I do, and I want my listeners to love what they do too! It is often the case for some people that following their passions is easier said than done. With that being said, it CAN be done. So I’m sharing my story, and the stories of others like me, to share exactly how we found a happy and fulfilled life. By sharing these lessons, I hope my listeners will be inspired to start their journey to living the life of their dreams.

DISCOVER PODS: What kind of feedback have you heard from your listeners?

LUZIOUS: The response has been really great! I am honored and inspired when a listener takes time to reach out to me. Before creating “Snack Size,” I looked into podcasts that involved drag queens, most had something to do with the TV show “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” While that is an awesome show, I know first hand that the drag community has much more to offer, so I wanted my podcast to highlight all the things you learn from being a drag performer.  With that as the focus, I think I’ve been able to reach my listeners in a really special way. My very first listener email came just a couple hours after I uploaded my first episode, and the listener said, “…we have never met, and likely won’t, but to know that you support and love me means more than I can ever express. And makes me feel like I am truly not alone in this world.” For me, making “Snack Size” isn’t about how many downloads I have or my ranking. I measure it’s success based on responses from my listeners, as it lets me know I am making a difference in their lives.

DISCOVER PODS: Describe your recording set up? What equipment are you using?

LUZIOUS: Honestly, it’s just headphones, a Blue Yeti, and my laptop. I record in my kitchen, as its the farthest away from the windows in my apartment, which face a busy street. Once I record, I just edit any remaining noise out in the post-production process. As I mentioned, I am brand new to podcasting, so I’m just using what I got to make this podcast happen! This very much parallels my message with “Snack Size,” which would be to use what you got, to get what you want!

DISCOVER PODS: What’s the biggest challenge you face as an indie podcaster?

LUZIOUS: It’s been a little over a month since I began podcasting, and I’d say the hardest part so far has been the process of getting started. If you have never podcasted before and you are looking into it, there are a lot of differing opinions and advice about what to do, what to avoid, what is important to creators, what is marketable to listeners, etc. Navigating through all that information and pinpointing what would be best for me to tell my story was a challenge. But I’ve found something that really works for where I am in my podcasting journey and will provide me a good foundation to build on in the future. My goal for “Snack Size” is that one day it wouldn’t be an indie podcast, but for now, I’m just happy to be putting myself out there.

DISCOVER PODS: Where do you want to take your podcast?

LUZIOUS: In the immediate future, I am looking to incorporate the perspective of different types of artists, not just drag performers. I’m interested to listen to and discuss the journey of other creative people who aren’t in my field. In the long term future, I would like to turn “Snack Size” into a video podcast so that viewers can see me interacting with my guests. I also want to expand my scope from just self-empowerment to talking about social issues in the LGBT+ community, as well as the world. Just like I tell my listeners, the sky is the limit. I look forward to letting my podcast organically grow and change as I grow as a podcaster.

DISCOVER PODS: What other podcasts are you listening to now?

LUZIOUS: “The Bellas Podcast”, “The B. Scott Show”, “The Suga”, and “Bring Back My Girls.”

DISCOVER PODS: Anything else you’d like to add?

LUZIOUS: First, thank you DiscoverPods for this opportunity! Second, if you are reading this, ask yourself one question: “Are you living the life of your dreams?” If you can say yes, email me at lala@snacksizepodcast.com and tell me how you did it! If not, then give “Snack Size” a listen. Everyone deserves to love what they do and it just might take a queen like me to help you get there!
