True crime podcasts all that new, you’ve probably listened to at least one in the past. We’ve written extensively about true crime podcasts before. What we haven’t done, however, is spotlight a podcast aimed at recapping true crime entertainment as a genre. Think about any movie or TV podcast you’ve heard, but specifically for true crime. Enter, True Crime Obsessed.

The shear fact that True Crime Obsessed exists is a testament to the proliferation of true crime as a genre — it’s now getting the respect of other genres of mainstream entertainment.

Reviewing and recapping true crime podcasts isn’t everything True Crime Obsessed does though. Hosts Patrick and Gillian have the requisite chemistry required for any good podcast. They have the perfect balance of entertainment, analysis, and humor needed to properly dissect a true crime podcast. I got a change to catchup with Patrick about the podcast, true crime as a genre, and their production schedule. See below for our Q&A.

Discover Pods: How did you decide to get into podcasting?

Patrick: Gillian and I are both New Yorkers and bona fide theater nerds, so we started by making Broadway-themed podcasts. The podcasts were our way of tricking fancy Broadway types into hang out with us.

DP: How does True Crime Obsessed differentiate from other true crime podcasts?

Patrick: With True Crime Obsessed, we have two main objectives–to be the funniest true crime podcast out there while at the same time being super respectful of the victims. Each week we watch a true crime documentary and then we recap it. We use clips from the documentary both to help tell the story and to highlight the ridiculous and hilarious aspects of the case. Can you imagine laughing your face off at a recap of “The Keepers” or “Mommie Dead and Dearest”? No? We promise our mix of feminist, uber-gay, victim-advocating sass will get you there.

DP: What are some of your favorite TC podcasts out there? Which should listeners start with?

Patrick:

  • Crime Writers On
  • Criminal
  • Truth and Justice
  • In the Dark
  • Done Disappeared
  • Missing And Murdered

DP: How has listener feedback been?

Patrick: We have been blown away by the listener response and the community that has developed around the podcast. Mostly listeners seem to appreciate that they find themselves laughing unexpectedly and empathetically at these horrific situations. Mostly our listeners have encouraged us to go even further–to not shy away from being our passionate, opinionated, super sassy selves.

DP: What’s your recording and editing schedule like?

Patrick: It takes between 5 and 6 hours for us to watch the documentary before recording. We watch separately and take very detailed notes. We don’t share our thoughts or opinions before we start recording so that we’ll come to it fresh. We record on Wednesdays and it usually takes us about 2 hours to get through the session. Pretty much everything out of Gillian’s mouth has me rolling on the floor or pounding the table in rageful agreement about whatever miscarriage of justice we’re talking about. Recording day is a highlight of the week for both of us.

DP: What’s the hardest challenge for you as an indie podcaster?

Patrick: Our biggest challenge has been growing our audience. But we’re tackling the challenge and are having a great time connecting with other great producers in the true crime podcasting world!

DP: What podcasts do you listen to in your spare time?

Patrick: I’m a politics junkie, so NPR Politics Podcast, The Daily, Pod Save America, and FiveThirtyEight Politics Podcast.

DP: Anything else you’d like to add?

Patrick: Come hang out with us, we’re the gay-best-friend and sassy / opinionated gal pal you’ve always wanted. And we promise to make you laugh your face off.

Give us a try by starting with episode 12: “Jesus Camp” or Episode 26: “Tabloid.” They are two of our most popular and a couple of our favorites as well.
