Do you watch Forensic Files for background noise? Can’t fall asleep without some light, true crime podcast listening? If you are constantly running out of true crime media to consume, It’s Always the Husband is your new binge-worthy show! Join hosts and real-life friends (and wives) Sarah and Megan as they share their love of all things true crime and discuss why, when a partner goes missing, it’s always the husband. Episodes come out weekly and draw from Sarah and Megan’s favorite true crime television shows. They both have charming, Midwest accents that are reminiscent of another crime world, Fargo. They are witty, funny and truly enjoy one another’s company. While telling these brutal and sometimes horrific stories, they interject with anecdotes regarding their own husbands and exes of all shapes and sizes. The podcast is fairly new but growing quickly thanks to the supportive fanbase these women have built. Wishing you happy true crime travels and remember, it’s always the husband.

We were fortunate to talk with Nelson and McDermott about the podcast, how they differentiate from other podcasts, and their future plans in podcasting. See below for our full Q&A.

DISCOVER PODS: How’d you get into podcasting?

NELSON: We have been avid listeners of podcasts ever since Serial came on the scene. Our obsession focused on true crime. It became something that we discussed and shared with all our friends. We have discussions about true crime and true crime TV shows nearly everyday. Megan and I decided that possibly we could turn our discussions into a podcast of our own. We are still shocked that we managed to pull it together. The day we saw our own podcast on Apple Podcasts was so exciting and a dream come true.

MCDERMOTT: Sarah and I have always been fans of talk radio, and have nerdily gone to the state fair to watch some live tapings. We always talked about how we could get our own radio show, but of course know nothing about broadcasting. Then we found podcasts. We would drive up to girls’ weekend and listen to Sword and Scales and Casefiles together and get ourselves in the mood to drink. I cleaned my kitchen -which I never do- literally with my own tears while listening to S-Town. Our friend groups and our conversations and group texts revolve around what to listen to next and our incredulous reactions to the stories presented. To say we’re obsessed with podcasts would be an understatement. And we’re just vain enough that we knew we had to hear our own idiocy and period jokes on Apple Podcasts.

DISCOVER PODS: In your own words, why should listeners tune in to It’s Always The Husband?

NELSON: We honestly just try to make each other laugh and have a blast recording the podcast. Hopefully listeners will love the true crime story and laugh at our foolishness. We focus on stupid, terrible husbands that commit awful crimes and get caught…because they are narcissistic morons. If someone can listen to us and get a great laugh, forget their daily stress, and become podcast addicts like us, we’ve been successful.

MCDERMOTT: Sarah’s so funny. Honestly. My only job is to laugh at the hysterical things that come out of her mouth. And husbands are sometimes horrible, so wives should beware, and know what to look for so they’re not the next wife to take a pipe-bomb up the butt.

DISCOVER PODS: What kind of feedback have you heard from your listeners?

NELSON: Our feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and supportive. We have sent it out to all our friends and asked them to share. They listened and said they loved it! We are so happy that people are finding it hilarious and getting great entertainment. One listener said that our podcast needs a warning before listening while driving, you may crash from laughing so hard. The fact that we have listeners in Europe, Australia and Asia after three weeks in existence blows our minds.

MCDERMOTT: Well, no one in my family will listen except my sister, who is obsessed every time she gets a shout-out. But my friends who have listened say they love it (I mean, it’s to my face, so let’s be real, I have no clue what they’re saying behind my back) and people who have shared or followed online or have left reviews on Apple apparently think we are funny and foul-mouthed, which I guess is what we are going for! Woot!

DISCOVER PODS: Describe your recording set up? What equipment are you using?

NELSON: Our recording set up is about as basic as it gets.  We are so new to podcasting that we still are learning as we go.  It is recorded in my kitchen with boom mics on a laptop computer. We have a Scarlet Focusrite 2i2 and two dynamic mics. Our headphones were borrowed and are literally from the 1970s… which we love. We edit on Audacity and that is due to the amazing podcasters that put out tutorials so newbies can learn.

MCDERMOTT: I know nothing. I love putting on the headphones.

DISCOVER PODS: What’s the biggest challenge you face as an indie podcaster?

NELSON: We researched online how to get started.  It was a tough learning curve, but so many other podcasters out there sharing their knowledge and giving advice. That was incredibly helpful. Our biggest challenge is getting noticed. We are our own producers and a completely unknown name.  We do not have any other previous following. It is up to us to hustle for attention. We both have day jobs that are pretty stressful mentally and two other part-time jobs, so we’ve had to be good about setting schedules and recording . Of course, once we get a following it is all on us to be a podcast worthy of listeners.  We need to be an amazing source of entertainment so we can keep our new listeners.

MCDERMOTT: I really haven’t faced many challenges, except how to get more wine in the middle of a recording, and how to make my voice not sound like a high-pitched dog whistle when I get fired up. Honestly, Sarah has been the impetus for getting this started. She was just like, “We’re doing this. We’ve talked about it forever. I have this idea. Come over next week.” I was like, “Do you have Prosecco?” She said she did, so I stopped by. The rest is history. Actually, I still have little kids at home so I have to sneak away to watch terrifying tales of murderous husbands and can’t listen to anything in the car when they’re around, so that’s rough. #momlife Oh wait, one more, it’s really HARD to keep our identities a secret. We have jobs that may or may not frown upon our foul-language! We want to completely rip on people but it would be inappropriate and bring shame to our families. Luckily, Sarah has learned to edit.

DISCOVER PODS: Where do you want to take your podcast?

NELSON: The main goal is to be able to just podcast for our jobs.  We are loving every minute so far. That goal is far away, but hopefully attainable. The fact that our current listeners get such a kick out of it and our podcast makes them laugh feels great. We aren’t for everyone; we use a lot of foul language and we are huge goofballs.  So far, that has been the attraction!

MCDERMOTT: I want to take it to the TOP! Bam! I want to be sitting next to Georgia and Karen on a stage in Budapest talking about the murders we love, all the money we’ve been able to donate to organizations that support women and victims, and laughing with my best friend, Sarah.

DISCOVER PODS: What other podcasts are you listening to now?

NELSON: Casefile, Date with Dateline, Dateline, Small Town Murder, Once Upon a Crime and My Favorite Murder have been our go-to podcasts for years. If you aren’t listening to those, start now! Now!

MCDERMOTT: I nerd out to Presidential. I love that there’s just one episode for each president and I don’t feel compelled to binge… I can fall in and out of it whenever I have an hour. I have also just finished Detective Trapp- a bad-ass female cop, and Chasing Cosby, which was horrifying and dream-shattering.

DISCOVER PODS: Anything else you’d like to add?

NELSON: We are so grateful that we have been supported by our friends and family.  Hopefully new people can check it out and travel on this podcast journey with us.

MCDERMOTT: This is absolutely a dream come true. We love doing this- mostly because we get away from life for an hour or two, get to chat, have a drink, laugh our asses off, and talk about murdery stuff! What could be better?
