Podcast Spotlight: Shifting Her Experience (she.)

Welcome to an eye-opening, feminist podcast. Each week, Sophie and Tiana, two unconventional women in a loving relationship, discuss the modern women’s experience through different cultural lenses. There are many different ways to be a woman in the world, and no one experience fits everyone. Unconventional women could not be straight, could not be interested in having children, and could not want to marry young. Listening to these two is like listening to your cool aunts, who are here to expand your worldview and show you different ways of womanhood. They discuss bisexuality, love languages, intersectional feminism, healthy relationships and more.
We all recognize the unfair societal pressures and expectations put upon women. But the good news is women have always been exercising their own agency and redefining the feminine experience! Shifting Her Experience celebrates these stories, including honoring a Woman of the Week each episode. If you are an unconventional woman, you will enjoy hearing from Sophie and Tiana about experiences you may have faced.
We were fortunate to talk with Tiana & Sophie about the podcast, how they differentiate from other podcasts, and their future plans in podcasting. See below for our full Q&A.

DISCOVER PODS: How’d you get into podcasting?
TIANA & SOPHIE: We’re a couple that loves to have meaningful discussions around non-traditional topics. No topic is too taboo in our house. We found ourselves having these conversations in the privacy of our own home or amongst friends, and we thought it would be helpful to bring our discussions to the public. When we both look back on our journeys individually, we’ve definitely lived our lives outside of traditional stereotypes from a very young age. Because of this, we wanted to be an advocate for topics that not many other platforms speak about. We felt compelled to offer these discussions to other women seeking the same conversations that we were. We personally feel that we would have loved to listen to a podcast covering non-traditional topics for women, so we saw a gap in the market that we had an itch to fill in the hopes that other women would feel the same.
Aside from our love for having open discussions, Tiana has experience hosting on-camera for entertainment networks, whereas Sophie has experience writing for several viral blogs. Our skills combined really make a great team for outlining and delivering content, which made us interested in producing podcasts in the first place.
DISCOVER PODS: In your own words, why should listeners tune in to she.?
TIANA & SOPHIE: she. or shifting her experience is a podcast meant to provoke thought within yourself and discussions amongst your partner, friends or family. There are so many women seeking a perspective outside of the traditional stereotypical female role, and that’s where we come in! We want to shift the mentality (hence our name, shifting her experience) behind this belief that women are meant and expected to follow a certain path in life (to get married, have children, etc). Our goal is to give a voice to those who want to break out of tradition or design their own life within those traditions. Each episode tackles a new topic from the alternative perspective, and we host an open dialogue around these discussions. We cover sexuality and feminist topics from a modern, relatable approach. Some examples of episodes include, explaining bisexuality, stop pressuring women to have kids, and emotional maturity. This podcast is for all the women out there that question societal norms imposed on femininity…and based on our feedback, we know there’s quite a few of you!
DISCOVER PODS: What kind of feedback have you heard from your listeners?
TIANA & SOPHIE: We’ve gotten a tremendous amount of support and feedback from women all over the world who have told us that they relate heavily to our discussions and feel both seen and heard. Our audience is primarily women aged 16 – 35, but we’ve had several male listeners or women outside of that age group follow us and reach out as well. Since launching, we’ve received many messages from women that feel comfortable sharing their own personal story of how they’re living a non-traditional life. It’s been so moving to read the DMs of women sharing their stories and acknowledging their bravery for designing their own life. We’ve had LGBTQ+ women thank us for covering relatable topics that aren’t often discussed, as well as heterosexual women recognizing a different perspective. We’ve also been told that people like our “accents” depending on where in the world you’re from haha!
We’ve been able to leverage several marketing platforms, but gained the most followers after posting our first TikTok related to our podcast. We’re happy to connect and hear feedback back from our followers on various platforms, whether it be Instagram, TikTok, or podcast apps!
DISCOVER PODS: Describe your recording set up? What equipment are you using?
TIANA & SOPHIE: We use a fairly simple set up for recording our podcast. We record from our bedroom, as it’s the most insulated part of our home. Our equipment includes 2 Fifine microphones, 2 Sony MDR7506 headphones and GarageBand as our recording and editing software. We’re of the belief that it doesn’t take an expensive recording setup and software to make a successful podcast. When not podcasting, Tiana works as a full time Post Production Supervisor, so is able to use her skills and tricks within editing to make the podcast sound professional, even with a simple set up.
DISCOVER PODS: What’s the biggest challenge you face as an indie podcaster?
TIANA & SOPHIE: Our biggest challenge as of now is sponsorship and monetization. We’ve been apprehensive regarding certain sponsorships deals and are currently seeking one that is the best fit for our podcast. We’re interested in monetizing our podcast and partnering with brands that really suit our content, and one’s of course that we personally believe in.
DISCOVER PODS: Where do you want to take your podcast?
TIANA & SOPHIE: We are aiming to grow shifting her experience into a full recognizable brand with discussions, blog posts, clothing and public speaking appearances. We currently have minimal merch available on our website, but are seeking to develop more clothing for purchase that represent our brand. As Sophie is a talented writer, we are looking to expand our website into a blog as well, mirroring the topics we cover on our podcast. We absolutely love representing a group of both non-traditional women and LGBTQ+ women and hope to be able to extend our voices on to new platforms.
