Do you have enough money to retire? How about your emergency fund? Do you have enough to stave off stress should something unfortunate happen?

If you answered no to those questions, don’t worry, you’re not alone. Fully one third of American’s surveyed in 2019 admitted that they don’t utilize a household budget. And, let’s be completely honest… I’m sure a few respondents were fudging the truth a bit.

Look, I get it. I’m terrible at budgeting. I feel you.

Budgeting is about as fun as going on a crash diet. The urge to splurge on spending is as powerful as substance abuse. But admitting we need to make changes is the first step towards financial rehabilitation.

Luckily, there are excellent personal finance podcasts that we can fold into our daily recovery routines. And you don’t need a million of them. You just need a few of the right ones to set your foundation. Take a deep breath and we’ll raise a glass to our collective retirement.

Here are the four best personal finance podcasts we should all be subscribing to.

The Dave Ramsey Show

Dave Ramsey found his calling, financial coaching, a bit later in life after his real estate empire imploded. Saddled with highly leveraged property, Dave and his wife spent several years living in denial and fighting tooth and nail to stave off the inevitable.

That was 30 years ago. Today Dave preaches (and the emphasis is on preaches, as Dave’s lessons are “Biblically based) frugality, deleveraging, and sound investments. Over the past 30 years of radio, writing, and now in the new medium of podcasting, there really isn’t a personal finance subject Dave hasn’t broached.

His show is entertaining and the topics are diverse and wide ranging. One aspect of Dave’s show I particularly like is that it really is for anyone. Dave’s emphasis on taking “baby steps” means that even if you’re flat broke, in debt, or doing fairly well, Dave’s show should improve your position.

Definitely a must subscribe.

We Study Billionaires

Hey, you’re likely not going to become a billionaire. Let’s just be honest about that. But that certainly doesn’t mean you can’t learn a hell of a lot by going straight to the top.

Another personal finance truth we need to fully understand is that if you want to seriously get ahead, you’re going to have to earn / invest your way up. Saving just isn’t going to build any wealth.

With that in mind, hosts Preston Pysh and Stig Brodersen spend 45 minutes to an hour delving into a specific point of investing advice gleaned from some of the most successful investors in the history of capitalism. The lessons they learn from the greats are distilled down into something us mere mortals can actually apply to our lives and grow our wealth.

ChooseFI

If you haven’t noticed, the days of graduating college, getting a job at a manufacturing firm, and retiring in 40 years with a gold watch, are gone. And they aren’t coming back.

This is the basic epistemology of the “financial independence” movement. A movement that is as much about personal development and empowerment as it is about personal finance.

ChooseFI serves as something of an umbrella organization that hosts several podcasts that focus on different niches within the FI movement, but there is also a namesake ChooseFI podcast that serves a wider audience within the movement.

The podcast itself runs about an hour and gives practical advice and motivation to accelerate the listener’s trajectory towards financial independence.

If you find yourself still sitting on student loan debt and are worried about the stability of your employment, the FI movement, and specifically the ChooseFI podcast is worth a listen.

Smart Passive Income

When it comes to retirement and financial stability, passive income is basically the Holy Grail. The financial independence movement is important, but it can be a bit of a grind. A bit of a sacrifice.

Passive income is all about creating an asset that works for you without you having to add extra effort. The idea is that time is the most valuable commodity you have. It’s the only thing you can’t get more of. You have a finite amount and when it’s gone… it’s gone. So why trade time for money?

Host Pat Flynn puts out a weekly show where he interviews some of the most successful entrepreneurs around and marries those interviews with practical advice on building your own wealth building assets.

Pat and the team also give out a number of assets that will walk you through the basics of setting up a business from scratch so that you aren’t stuck trading your precious time for an uncertain paycheck.

The World Is Changing… No… It’s Changed

The world is smaller than ever. Globalization has long since changed the very fundamentals of the way the economy functions. Trends are accelerating, automation is displacing workers, and we’ve all lived through three once in a lifetime economic cataclysms in just the past 20 years.

The reason we’ve looked at these four podcasts today is that they don’t only cover the basics of setting up a budget, saving, and debt management — they also are mission focused on helping their listeners to build real, sustainable, wealth. Wealth that will help ensure that retirement isn’t a lofty goal, but an achievable reality.
